Take A Chance With Rebel Bred

Nathan Brooks is the creator and founder of the streetwear brand known as Rebel Bred Clothing. In 2016 he decided he wanted to create something that motivates, uplifts, inspires, and educates people. The point of emphasis for the brand is African American history, unity, and spirituality. He landed on the idea of creating a clothing brand so he could reach an urban demographic of all ages. He draws inspiration from life experiences, historical moments, social injustices, spiritual awareness and of course art and music.

What does Rebel Bred mean to you? How did you come up with that name?

To me Rebel Bred means taking a chance to pursue your dreams and following your own life’s path. The name just found a way to stick after some brainstorming and over time has fit just perfect with the brand.

How important is community engagement to you? How much of an impact does this have on your brand?

Community engagement is very important, I believe the definition of community has changed over the years. It used to mean just the people in your neighborhood, but now with social media and the changes in the family units your community can be spread all over the world, depending on your advocacy.

What is your favorite design from Rebel Bred?

There are two that come to mind, the Harriet Tubman “Lead By Faith, Not By Fear'' and the new Transatlantic hoodie for 2021.

What have been some of your favorite events you've attended as a vendor?

Too many to name, I’ve enjoyed most of them but I’ll name 3. Juneteenth, 10five, and A New MENtality.

Who is your biggest inspiration as a designer?

I’d say Ralph Lauren

I find mentorship to be very important to the success of creatives. Do you have any mentors? Have you considered becoming a mentor to a young entrepreneur?

Yes, I find that to be true as well and thankfully I’ve found my mentors in Nisha Blackwell, Adam Kenney, and Katie Johnson over at Origins and Bridgeway Capital.

Are you looking to expand beyond Pittsburgh?

Absolutely, currently targeting other cities, be on the lookout for some big news this year.

Has your business model changed or adapted due to the pandemic?

Yes, the business has become more online centered but the foundation is still the same.

If you could have any celebrity wear Rebel Bred down the red carpet, who would it be and why?

I’d probably say Kevin Durant, I like how he goes about his business.

As it is Black History Month, do you have any other black owned businesses you would like to shout out?

What's up next for Rebel Bred?

Scaling the business, getting ready for a spring drop, hopefully a couple fashion shows and more collaborations.
