A Fashion Journey with StylingByChi
Chi Ilochi is an introvert at heart, and ironic as it sounds that’s where she found the right attention. Chi always found herself reading “InStyle”, “Essence”, and “Jet Magazine” in hopes of finding a never-before-seen look. Before she knew it, she began to create her own “never before seen looks”. She began dressing in wacky clothes and prints, which ultimately resulted in people teasing her for her new found style. She soon realized as she got older that most people put down what has potential or value. From that revelation she knew it was something she wanted to pursue. She knew she needed to put herself out there because she wanted all black girls and boys who are outcasts to feel welcomed, represented, and included. If she can do it, they can do it too and they can do it better!
Have you always known you wanted to work in fashion or was there a specific experience that inspired you to do so?
During my high school years, I loved to create eccentric and unique looks. I had a friend who asked “Have you ever thought about being a stylist?”. I didn’t really have an answer to that question, all I knew was I loved to dress and create memorable looks. I researched what a Fashion Stylist was and it was everything I loved doing. From that point on, I knew I wanted to create my own lane in the Fashion & Style Industry so I decided to start my own styling company “StylingByChi”. It hasn’t been an easy journey, but it has definitely been worth it.
How would you describe your personal style?
I would describe my personal style as unique, eclectic, and vibrant. I love to create memories and tell stories through clothing.
What are some pros and cons with the fashion industry in Pittsburgh, PA?
I believe this picture describes how Pittsburgh’s Fashion Industry feels to me. It’s a lonely, dog eat dog vibe as most industries are in this city. I would love to connect with other creatives in this fashion industry, but it’s not very easy and opportunities are a dime a dozen here. Most of my collaborations happen outside of the city, and I hope that changes one day, but if it doesn’t that’s okay with me. Nonetheless I am inspired by the talent that is in overflow in this city. I am inspired by the drive, the hunger, and the creativity. I believe it is those qualities that will always set Pittsburgh aside in the Fashion Industry.
If you could be the stylist for any tv show what would it be and why?
I would love to be a stylist for Insecure. I am EXTREMELY inspired by Issa Rae and the entire cast. I know that it would be an experience to remember, and a challenge that I would be eager to rise to.
What does being a stylist mean to you, and what would you say to someone who may not see the importance of styling?
A stylist is more than just picking out an outfit. Fashion Styling has the power to change your life by improving your confidence and mental health. Fashion Styling has gotten me through many dark times in my life, and I know it has the power to do that for you. Being able to change someone’s life, perception, and mental well being through clothing is a gift from God that I will never take for granted.
If you could work with anyone in the fashion industry who would it be?
If I could work with anyone in the Fashion Industry it would be Pharrell Williams. Pharrell’s fashion sense and impact is amazing. I have looked up to Pharrell and his creative genius since I was 10 years old. Seeing what he can do with clothing, and design is nothing short of inspiring.
What are some of your favorite projects you have styled?

2nd Image : Instagram.com/danies_grammy
These two looks are my absolute favorites. The talent you see above you were truly blessings to work with. These two ladies really made me tap into my creativity, by expanding my vision, and teaching me their personal art forms through their gifts. They are both such a joy to work with, and anyone who is given the privilege of working with them, will be sure to churn out some great content.
Your social media presence is very consistent and true to your brand. What advice do you have for creatives who struggle keeping up with their social media presence?
Thank you! I really appreciate that. I love what I do so much that I don’t even realize how consistent I am. I believe it is important for every creative to know their what and why. What do you love to do and why do you love it? Once they can honestly answer both of these questions, being consistent on social media won’t seem like such a chore and more like a virtual portfolio. It’s hard to be consistent at anything in this life when your heart isn’t in it. I look at any form of social media as my canvas and my content as the paint. I get excited about sharing my work with the world in hopes of inspiring or changing the life of another.
